2014/2015: A homage to Woody Allen
Woody Allen, born in New York in 1935, will celebrate his “first” eighty years in 2015.
After having covered classical material for the past few years, this year the Workshop will study and research a contemporary artist who has had a profound impact on twentieth-century culture: his films, his plays, his sketches, and his jokes are a great set of material for students who are interested in the theater workshop. His works also offer the opportunity to revisit the American music of the Sixties and Seventies, as songs will be included in the Workshop’s final show.
His oeuvre is quite vast but, depending on the number and opinion of the students, we will begin with scenes taken from his films (Bullets over Broadway, Annie Hall), from his monologues and sketches for American TV and radio, and from some of his plays (God, M).
The idea is for students to create a show that will retrace part of Allen’s career, that will capture his style (especially through the choice of music and the choreography) and which will be a modest homage to this artist’s career.
Acting and, to a lesser extent, song and dance will be the topics discussed with students in the belief that Allen’s earthy, humorous language will help participants to achieve the kind of naturalness that will help them get the most out of this new theatrical experience.
“Excuse me, I'm not essentially a political comedian at all. I ... interestingly had, uh, dated ...a woman in the Eisenhower Administration...briefly... and, uh, it was ironic to me 'cause, uh . . . tsch . . . 'cause I was trying to, u-u-uh, do to her what Eisenhower has been doing to the country for the last eight years.” (Woody Allen – Annie Hall).
Director Ferdinando Ceriani will be joined by Carla Ferraro, a professional actress who graduated from the Accademia d’Arte Drammatica Silvio d’Amico. She will show students how body language creates characters and will do the choreography. Alice Guidi will work on singing and staging.
All LUISS students who would like to take part in the Workshop should go directly to the first rehearsal with director Ferdinando Ceriani on Thursday, November 20. No registration is necessary.
