LUISS Guido Carli

Political Science

The bachelor's degree program in Political Science is aimed at giving students a mastery of methods and content, which will provide them with scientific knowledge of contemporary politics.

The degree program offers a solid preparation for a wide variety of professions, many linked to newly developed or developing subjects in the globalizing world. In the first year, it is possible to choose between two majors: Scienze Politiche (in Italian) and Politics, Philosophy and Economics, held entirely in English.

Class: L-36 Scienze politiche e delle relazioni internazionali (Political Science and International Relations)

Presentation

The Department of Political Science offers a major in Italian in Scienze Politiche and one in English in Politics, Philosophy and Economics.

The bachelor's degree program in Political Science is aimed at giving students a mastery of methods and content, which will provide them with scientific knowledge of contemporary politics. For this purpose, the program provides an interdisciplinary theoretical framework, which includes economics, politics, philosophy, law, sociology, history and communications. This is designed to encourage the ability – essential in order to understand contemporary politics – to grasp the relationships between the economic system, the political system and institutional structures. Teaching is mainly done through lectures, as at least for the first phase of university, this methodology remains the most effective one.

Lectures are integrated with more innovative methods of teaching – thanks to workshops, written tests, and case studies – in order to encourage the natural passage from bachelor’s degree studies to more specialized ones. The underlying idea, which has already been successful in several countries, is to offer the foundation needed to master political and institutional phenomena, debates on fundamental questions of our time, and the economic aspect of contemporary reality.

Considerable focus is given to languages. At the end of their studies, graduates in Political Science will have perfected their knowledge and mastery – both written and oral – of English and another foreign language (including Arabic, Chinese, French, Spanish, German and Russian). Language teaching is provided by native English teachers and done throughout the program, with evaluations by specialized institutions. This is followed by a language and academic/specialized skills module taught by LUISS professors, which is completed with an exam and assignment for a grade and credits.

The Politics, Philosophy and Economics major is open only to students with advanced proficiency in English, who continue to work on Academic English for Social Studies as well as one or two other foreign languages.

Employment and professional opportunities for graduates

This bachelor’s degree program provides solid preparation for a wide range of professions, many linked to newly developed or developing subjects in the globalizing world.

At the end of the three-year program, graduates will be ready for decision-making roles, obtained through competitions open to bachelor’s degree graduates or more direct forms of personnel selection preceded by internships in the ranks of public administration, of national and international institutions, private businesses, in sectors related to organization, management of human resources and external relations, as well as public and private entities that operate internationally and in communications.

However, the main outlet of the bachelor’s degrees has so far consisted in admission to a master’s degree program (or to a first-level master), in the awareness that the knowledge and interdisciplinary experience acquired in the three-year period needs to be refined and completed in order to be better appreciated by the world of work. The master’s degree programs at LUISS and the many first and second level masters are designed to meet these objectives.
