History

LUISS Guido Carli traces its origins back to the transformation of a pre-existing Roman institution, Università Pro Deo, founded in 1966.  In 1974, a group of businessmen led by Umberto Agnelli decided to invest people and money in an innovative project for the education and training of a managerial class.  The University adopted a new educational model along the lines of those found in the leading international universities.

In the following years, the founders were joined by other important public and private industrial corporations and credit institutions which brought a qualified group of entrepreneurs to the Board of Directors of the University.

In 1977, the University officially changed its name to LUISS - Libera Università Internazionale degli Studi Sociali, that is Private International University for Social Studies.  A year later, the then Chairman of the Italian Confederation of Industry (Confindustria), Guido Carli, was appointed as President of the University.  In this period, the hallmarks of the LUISS educational project became ever more evident: highly selective admissions, a fixed number of admissions for students, a program of studies in tune with market demands and hence close to the business world, as well as the study of information technology and foreign languages.  Guido Carli remained President of LUISS until his death in 1993.

In 1982, LUISS expanded its academic offering by adding the Faculty of Law to the existing Faculty of Economics and Faculty of Political Science.

In 1994, the Board of Directors renamed the University in the memory of its former President, Guido Carli: LUISS Guido Carli.

In 1997, a separate company, LUISS Management SpA, was set up for market-oriented education.  In later years, it was renamed LUISS Business School and became a division of LUISS Guido Carli.

In the more than forty years since its founding, LUISS Guido Carli has played a key role in Italy's economic and cultural development.
