Where is LUISS Guido Carli?

LUISS is located in the heart of Rome, Italy.  Since 2007, the University moved to a new location in the exclusive Parioli neighborhood, where most of the teaching and research activities take place.  LUISS comprises five other campuses in adjacent areas.  Visit Campus and Maps for further details.

Is LUISS a private university?

LUISS Guido Carli is a private, independent university. It was established according to Article 1 of Italy's Higher Education Act, which gives independent universities full legal status while guaranteeing their autonomy in the areas of administration, teaching and discipline.  Its degrees and diplomas have complete legal and academic recognition.

How old is LUISS?

LUISS traces its origins back to the transformation of a pre-existing Roman institution, Università Pro Deo, founded in 1966.  In 1977, the University officially changed its name to LUISS - Libera Università Internazionale degli Studi Sociali, that is Private International University for Social Studies.  Visit History for a full overview of the University's origins.

Academics

What is the difference between undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate studies?

Undergraduate studies consists exclusively in Bachelor's Degree Programs.  They last three years and require 180 credits (ECTS - European Credit Transfer System) for completion.

Graduate studies include Master's Degree Programs (which last two years and require 120 credits, ECTS, for completion) and First Level Master's Degree Programs (which consist in advanced scientific courses or higher continuing education studies.  They last one year and require 60 credits, ECTS, for completion).

Postgraduate studies include Doctoral Degree Programs (or Ph.D. Programs) and Second Level Master's Degree Programs (which consist in advanced scientific courses or higher continuing education studies, last one year and require 60 credits, ECTS, for completion).

What is a Single Cycle Program?

Single Cycle Programs aim at providing students with advanced education and training for highly qualified professions in specific areas.  They last five years and require 300 credits, ECTS, for completion.  The degree awarded is a Master's Degree.  LUISS offers a Single Cycle Program in Law.

The University consists of 3 Faculties (Economics, Law, and Political Science), 3 Departments (Economics and Management, Legal Science, and History and Political Science), and 2 Schools (School of Journalism and Business School).

Exchange Students

I am an international student and would like to study at LUISS Guido Carli, what should I do?

If your University has a Bilateral Agreement with LUISS (under the LLP Erasmus Programme or other Exchange Agreement), you can apply through the International Relations Office of your Institution. The first thing to do is to contact the co-ordinator in your home Institution.

How can I access the Library catalog?

All users web-wide have open access to LUISS Guido Carli’s Library catalog.

What does the Library catalog contain?

The catalog provides bibliographic descriptions of all the resources owned by the Library, and indicates where copies are located and whether they are available.  Books, journals, articles, PhD dissertations, and electronic resources are available in the Library catalog.  The journal section is being updated, therefore if you are looking for current information, please consult the Journals catalog.

How do I access the Library?

If you are an institutional user, you simply have to show your LUISS card.  If you don’t have it, you must then show a valid identity card.

I am external to LUISS University.  Can I access the Library anyway?

External users can access certain services by appointment only (for further information contact: +39.06.85225.600 – reference@luiss.it).

Can I use the Library's electronic resources from an off-campus location?

You can also access many of the electronic resources subscribed by the Library from an off-campus location (from home, for example).

Can I use the Library's electronic resources if I am an external user?

No, only institutional users and members of associated organizations can use electronic resources.

Are there English language electronic resources?

The Library subscribes to a number of foreign electronic resources, both in English and in other languages such as French or Spanish. You can consult a complete list or browse the e-Journals by language.
